Recollections of Thirty-Two Years in the State Senate Part 7 by Harvey Tallackson My last election was 2008. Of course everyone knows I lost that election very badly. It was the nastiest election of my life. I realized that I was the number one target of the Republican Party in North Dakota, when I objected to some of the early nasty and untrue literature being mailed out from Bismarck, and I was told you haven't seen anything yet. The huge amount of professionally prepared misleading and false material was very damaging to my campaign. This type of campaigning is becoming very common in United States politics. I have given much thought to the 2008 election I was so disgusted with the dirty campaigning that I wasn't myself for a few weeks. I did realize the mistake I made in accepting the parties nomination for re-election to another term in the Senate. I made the mistake of many politicians who try to stay in office too long. My age (83) was against me along with the fact I had some health problems. One of the problems of the Democrats in District 16 ,is we don't have any young people stepping forward as I did in 1976 to run for public office. I know we are not the only district in North Dakota having this problem. Ithasbeenarealexperience and honor to serve North Dakota and our 16th District in the North Dakota Senate. If I had the chance to do it over again I would gladly do it with enthusiasm. Public service to me is an honor and privilege and should be treated as such. In my 32 years of service I have nearly as many Republican friends as I have Democratic friends. My belief has always been to serve my state and District 16 first and be a politician secondly. More later.
