Page 2 March llth, 2010 Dakota Trails and Tales Roads Trips Are Good For Families by Dr. Larrie Wanberg Driving across western America to California is like a continuous visual documentary of the vastness of our country and the diverse cultures that shaped our national identity. It's just not the same as a take-off, a snack, a snooze and a landing in a new place within the time frame of a few hours. For me, it was days-upon- days of extending beyond the outer rings of the horizons to discover anew how fellow Americans are doing, to marvel how the pioneers managed the challenges of the geographical landscape, and to renew memories of my youth when I drove across America 60 years ago in a 1952 MG-TD on historic US Highway 66. This ten-state road trip was quite different. I was traveling with my daughter Britt, and my fifteen-month- old Golden Retriever named Gunnar in training as a medical-alert service dog. The trip was initiated to visit my three sons and their familiesofninegrandchildren and two great grandchildren in CA in celebration of my birthday. While traveling to and fro, Britt was exploring new markets for her ND- produced dog products.
