Down Our Street Continued From Page 3 In 1870 Frank LaRose built a cabin at the future site of old Joliette on the Red River; he lived there alone until Blucher Bovette settled on an adjacent section in 1872. LaRose also ran a ferry, had a wood yard for refueling steamboats, and kept a stage station. In 1878 Ernest, Joseph, Frank, and John Pariseau and Joseph, Euclid, and Dolphus Riopelle came to Pembina from Quebec, moved ten miles up the Red River, and took up claims. The Pariseaus then sent for their parents and their sister Permelia. The orphaned sister of the Riopelles accompanied them. Many more settlers claimed land in the area; among these were Robert Ferguson, Samuel Rumble, H.W. Purdy, John C. Canning, William McKibbon, and Joseph Hughes. In 1879 J.W. Hughes, A.W. Hazeltine, and J.W. Frazier settled near Joliette. On August 7 of that year a post office was established with John R. Rivit ["ND Place Names"] or Rivett ["Heritage '89"] as the postmaster in section 35, Joliette Township. By 1884 William McKibbon was the postmaster, and the post office was located in his farmhouse in section 35. Around 1887 it was moved one mile WNW to the new Joliette town site on the railroad in sections 27 and 35. Joliette-McArthur area from 1882 to 1890 included names such as Barron, Dietrich, Emerson, Shannon, Storm, and Wells. In 1889 John Hart arrived from Castlewood, SD, followed by his brother Arthur the next year. Settlers from Belgium included Charles Demestre and Adolph Von Lerberger in 1890. In 1901 Paul and Lucy Lefebvre arrived. Joliette boasted a bank, the Hart & Asseltine ["Heritage '89"] or Hazeltine General Store, a lumberyard, a farm implement business, hotel, grain ele.vator, town hall, and a school. In 1899 a Methodist Church was built in section 27, Joliette Township. It was dedicated with water from the Jordan River brought back by Dr. Moore. On September 25, 1907, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church was dedicated. It closed in 1963. In 1875 ["Heritage '89"] or 1876 Samuel B. Hamilton, Nicholas Hoffman or Huffman ["Heritage '89"], Charles J. Brown, and Adolph Carl staked out claims along the banks of the Tongue River ten to twelve miles west of Pembina in section 10, Township 162, Range 52 (later Carlisle Township). They were joined by Edwin Spicer, who in 1881 became the postmaster and in 1882 opened a store. All the men were discharged soldiers from Ft. Pembina. The community (never a town) was named Carlisle after Adolph Carl. On August 21, 1878, a post office was established with Adolph Carl as the postmaster. In 1880 or 1890 ["Heritage '89"] a school known as the "Four Corners School" was built in the middle of section eight of the Carlisle School District No. 23, but the country was so open that a group of farmers moved it to the wooded bank of the Tongue River. Nellie Eastman taught there in 1890 and Margaret Huffman in 1891. In January 1888 Carlisle School District #9 was organized, and John Hart taught in a log house on section 15 just across from Carlisle "village." Later it was moved to the northeast corner of the section. Carlisle church services were first held in the John Eastman residence, but were moved to the Modern Woodmen of America Hail in 1902.
