The Parents' Notes are posted to our website (www.drayton.k12. monthly - generally the first Monday of each month - August thru May. This issue of the newsletter (our first for the year) will cover a variety of topics to help you prepare your student(s) for the school year ahead and is also provided to the Valley News and Views. The school year is fast On Thursday, August 1 5 ',, there will be an open house and picnic for the elementary (PK - 6) parents at the school to discuss "new" programs in the elementary this year. Any parents who have not previously reviewed the concussion information and watched the informational video will also be able to do so that evening, This video and information was ........ = by the North Dakota State Legislature relative to concussions. Each athlete and his or her parents must review this irfformation prior to the athlete being able to participate. I would like to take a moment to welcome everyone to a new school year. The start will be challenging - especially for the secondary students as we are still in the throes of construction with work continuing on the upgrades to the heating system. We thank everyone in advance for their patience as we work through this difficult time. We have a number of programs and services to provide parents with timely. information regarding the educational status of their children such as our website, our parent alert calling system, and Power School (student database). Our website,, is intended to provide the parents and our public with information regarding the school. To assist in verifying contact information, ALL PARENTS are requested to take and make the time to come to the school during the times we have set aside for registration. Registration will be: [] Tuesday, August 6th (8 am to 4 pm); [] Wednesday, August 7th (Noon to 8 pm); and [] Thursday, August 8th (8 am to 4 pm). Thursday, August 8th is being set aside for families new to the Drayton School District. A letter was mailed earlier to parents outlining this information and more. As noted earlier, the first day of classes will be Tuesday, August 20th, bus routes will run that day and both breakfast and lunch will be available. The website has more information regarding school as does this newsletter. Please take a moment to review these informational resources. The Drayton School District offers a comprehensive curriculum beginning with our 4K Preschool program, single grade classrooms in K through grade 6, and a full junior high / high school slate of classes including the opportunity for students to take college courses while in high school. We are justifiably proud of our staff and the program we have to offer the students of Drayton School District. Learning opportunities include course offerings in house, online, at the vocational center, and over the interactive television connection. Through our membership in the North Valley Career and Technology Center students can take a variety of vocational courses both at the Center in Grafton and online. The Heart of the Valley Interactive Television Consortium provides students access to courses from the twenty-three member school districts and from other schools across the state including Mayville State, Valley City State, and other North Dakota colleges. Drayton will also be working with the North Dakota Center for Distance Education and PLATO Learning to provide students with additional educational opportunities through online asynchronous education. We will have some changes to our staff again this year. First, we will have a new principal- Mr. Dean Ralston will be returning to fulfill these responsibilities. We will also have a new third grade teacher - Mrs. Raichl Ratchensky, who will replace Mrs. Kraft. We will also have changes and a new teacher at the high school - Mr. Scott Webster will be replacing Mr. Gardner following his retirement. In addition, Mr. Klein and Mr. Gebur will not be returning to their part-time teaching positions. No one has been hired to replace them, with their classes being given to other staff. THEREWlLL BEAN OPEN HOUSE FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AND PARENTS THURSDAY, AUGUST 15TH BEGINNING AT 6 PM. FOOD AND BEVERAGE WILL BE PROVIDED FOR ALL. THE PICNIC WILL BE FOLLOWED BY STUDENTS AND TEACHERS MEETING IN THEIR ROOMS AND II AN INFORMATIONAL MEETING II FOR PARENTS IN THE GYM. | ANNOUNCEMENTS / PARENT NOTIFICATION The Drayton School District will continue to utilize the Alert Now instant notification system to assist our efforts in keeping parents informed of activities and changes in school schedule due to storms, special functions, and other happenings at the school. The system uses the contact information found in Power School so we need to keep this data as current and accurate as possible. To assist us in ensuring that your information is accurate, we ask that you come in during the time set aside for registration and verify your contact information. We also request that you provide us with any changes should these occur during the school year such as phone number, mailing address, etc. The Alert Now system enables us to send out a call, email, and / or text message to notify individuals when school is cancelled or if the starting or dismissal time for school will be changed due to weather or for any other reason. Please stop in and verify your contact information during registration. Messages can be sent to home phones, cell phones, or answering machines. Once a message has been programmed into the system, all parents should get the message within a matter of minutes. Please identify your preferred contact number during the registration process. Also, when you receive a call please listen to the message. Thank you for assisting with this matter. MISSION, VISION, AND SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT Mission Statement Striving for excellence today to prepare students to succeed in a challenging world tomorrow. Philosophy Democracy survives and flourishes when its citizens are well-informed. The task of North Dakota schools is to educate all children to assume responsible roles in this democracy. The Drayton Public School is the expression of the efforts of the people of the community to meet this task. The facilities, faculty, and other personnel are provided in the collective interest of the students attending the school and are available to encourage the highest possible achievement in each individual pupil regardless of sex, race, color, or creed. Vision The Drayton School District believes the core purpose of education is to teach people the process of rational thought and citizenship. Education is a tool that creates within the student the attitudes, skills, ideals, and appreciations which help to make him / her, a useful and intelligent citizen of democracy. Good citizenship includes a balance of emotional, physical, mental, moral, and social growth. To this end, the Drayton School District shall provide a curriculum while utilizing the methods to meet the present and future needs of the students. We fully realize the importance of fundamental skills and emphasize those skills as the basis for further learning and development. The Drayton School District recognizes that education is for all - without discrimination or prejudice. It will strive to find and develop within the students, the talents for them to be active participants in the educational process and guide them in choosing future endeavors. Goals The goal of education at the Drayton Public School is to help each student to complete the following: a) Learn to be a good citizen and practice democratic ideas and ideals. b) Develop communication, computational, and other skills to each individual ability. c) Develop good character, self- respect, and a feeling of self-worth. d) Form satisfying and responsible relationships with other people, including those with characteristics different from his / her own. e) Gain information needed to make job selections and develop skills to become productive individuals. f) Understand and practice the skills of family and community living. g) Learn the techniques of managing money, property, and resources. h) Develop a desire for learning now and it the future. i) Learn how to use leisure time. j) Practice and understand the ideas of health and safety. k) Become aware of and appreciate culture and beauty in the world. Counseling Review The 2009 Legislature enacted law requiring schools to notify its high school students that, upon request, a student is entitled to receive a consultative review of the student's individual high school education plan at least once during each high school grade. This is your notice of this option - upon the request of a student, the Drayton Public School District shall provide this review. This request should be presented to Mr. Jongetjes, the counselor. The review will involve a meeting between Mr. Ralston, Principal; Mr. Jongetjes, Counselor; and the student. Parents have the option of participating in this meeting and will be notified of the time and date of the meeting by Mr. Jongetjes. Power School To better keep you informed of your child's educational progress in school, you can access your child's academic progress. The Drayton School District uses PowerSchool and PowerGrade program. By obtaining your Iogin and password during registration, you will be able to gain access to your child's educational information, receiving up-to- date, real time information on your child's attendance and grades. You will also be able to see what assignments your child has pending or needs to complete. The PowerSchool parent access port can be found on our school website: www.drayton. We will continue to provide regular "paper" updates on your child's status as a matter of practice. We will also continue the practice of parent - teacher conferences (the first coming in September, at mid-term of the first nine weeks grading period and one at mid-term of the third quarter in February), watch the calendar for dates and times. [] Electronic Versions of the Regular Board Meeting Agenda and Material - Information the Board will be considering is also available for review on the website. The monthly agenda and accompanying materials are typically posted to the website one week prior to the scheduled meeting date. And many more items, take some time to check it out. SCHOOL DISTRICT PROFILE Each year, the Drayton School District in cooperation with the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (DPI), publishes an annual progress report on student achievement and other things. This report is called the School District Profile. This profile can be found on the DPrs website. I encourage you to review this report. The report outlines what the District is accomplishing - think of it as our report card. You may access our Profile (or the profile for any other school in North Dakota) by going to the following address: http://www. dpi.state.nd.usldpilreportslprofilelindex. shtm. The latest profiles are not currently available, but to get Drayton's Profile when available, go to the website, select Drayton Public School District # 19 from the listing of schools, selecting the most recent year which was 2012 - 2013 then click "submit". You will receive a listing of available reports. You may then review online (or in print) each of the reports or if you do not have Internet access or would prefer, we can provide you a print copy of the report by contacting the Office and requesting that we provide you with one once it becomes available ANNUAL AYP REPORT/ INFORMATION The Drayton School District is dedicated to providing its students the education they need to prepare them to graduate from high school and to enter their adult lives. Included with this newsletter you will find copies of the Drayton Elementary, Drayton High School, and Drayton School District Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) reports and letters explaining each report.
