In 1995 he published "Economic Thought Before Adam Smith." Chapter 8 is entitled "French mercantilist thought in the seventeenth century." Barthelemy de Laffemas (1545-1612) was the first major French mercantilist. Under his reign as the controller-general of commerce and the head of the Commission of Commerce, he had one good idea: he advised King Henry IV not to prohibit the export of bullion. Let bullion flow freely in and out of France, but then he went back to his mercantilist roots by telling the king to regulate strictly all commerce and industry. POETIC FRAGMENTS George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824) was one of the three great later Romantic poets. Here is a portion of his poem "The Destruction of Sennacherib": 'Tknd the widows of Ashur are loud in their wail, And the idols are broke in the temple of Baal; And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword, Hath melted like snow in the glance of the Lord!" Aim high. Behave honorably. Prepare to be alone at times, and to endure failure. Persist! The world needs all you can give." -Edward O. Wilson Outside the sun is shining against blue skies and the trees in our front yard bend and shake in the breeze. I sit in our humble living room watching the colors of the rainbow as they reflect off my rotating crystal angel. Three candles are lit nearby and my eyes gaze at the flickering flames. I am in limbo, attempting to organize my thoughts that seem so chaotic in this moment. The other nigh'tour family gathered at my little brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Kari Jo's home. My sister-in- law thought it was important for us to get together for my birthday early as they are leaving this week for Boston and nobody will be here Saturday. I was so grateful she remembered me as I have been anticipating a difficult birthday due to my brothers and their families being so far from home. It seems every year around my birthday I begin to contemplate even deeper the experiences life has bestowed on me and the relationships I have been blessed to be a part of. I'm sure this happens to many people as another year passes and we celebrate the daywe were born. It is a time of reflection, a time to count the blessings of our years. I sat next to my auntie Erma the other night as we gathered together and at one point she turned to me and said, "I feel so blessed." Day by day, I am amazed at how she never fails to be grateful for the little things in her life. Even when times are tough, she gets through them with her unfailing faith and her ability to see the good amidst the struggles. I held her hand for a while hoping to soak in what I tend to lose between the pages of life's uncertainty and there in the middle of it all, I received my strength for the day from my 86-year-old aunt. Behind my lighted candles hangs a picture of our friend Scott, donning his tux and a half smirk. He passed away a few years ago and I miss his goofy laugh and smile. He reminds me today to live, to enjoy the moments, to capture all that is directly in front of me with the fervent joy he lived with daily. He was a good friend, a constant cheerleader during rough times. I feel gratitude for having had him in our lives even though for too short of time. He seems to speak to me today encouraging me to persist when the worry threatens to consume me. This past Saturday, a few friends and I drove to Halma to take part in my first ever 5K walk/run in support of our friends father Neff Souder who is also in a battle with cancer. I had been thinking for quite some time I would like to partake in a 5K, it was an entry on my "Bucket List." It was a beautiful morning and as I usually do when I take a stroll on our gravel road, I prayed for Neil's healing. I was able to meet him after the walk and found out he is a tough Norwegian and is determined to win the battle. I have heard it said attitude is half the battle, for Neil it seems the battle has already been won. He has a great attitude and appreciated the support from family and friends so much. Our walk followed a paved road; I learned later we turned around right at Neil's gravelroad, where he has lived most of's life. On the way back, I couldn't help thinking about my big brother and the struggles he continues to undergo daily, including a great deal of pain and the difficulty of trying to function with neither of his arms or hands working very well due to the nerve damage he has had. My legs and hips were alreadytired when we turned around as I haven't been walking a lot or teaching yoga because I have been gone so much. But when I thought about these two men and the things they have overcome thus far, I went from my walking stride into a run. I had to stop and walk a few times but tried my best to run most of the way back. When I would feel pain, I worked through it; when I felt like crying, I pushed harder. And with each step 1 whispered, "total healing," as I pictured both of them cancer free. There was a beautiful butterfly that fluttered along side the road, directly above the grass It seemed as if this tiny creature was running with us, its symbolic inspiration gave me the breath I needed to continue andwhen I crossed the finish line, with sweat dripping from my brow, my face red with exertion, and my legs feeling like they would collapse from beneath my body, I felt really good to have accomplished something in support of another. My friends and I made a goal to run the entire race next year; I hope to do just that. Sometimes along the way, life gives us purpose, even when we don't recognize what that may be right away; it pushes us to places we never thought we would go. I really do feel blessed for the people I have met in my life, those who have given me the inspiration to recognize my strength when weakness saunters in. Their stories, their lives, their victories become the flickering lights of energy behind my own personal victories. My body is still sore from the excursion but with every tiny pain I feel, I am reminded that however hard the path may be, we must persist because the world truly needs all that we can give. poly Tarps 10 Size. from 6'x8' to 20x40 ' 30% OFF Ratchet Strop RubberTrp$trapsC hi' / Rat or J-Hook (, 30% OFF 512.99 C ii Canning Jars 701.284.7221 / 800.284.7222 00iiii!00iii!!0000i i00iiiiii iiii00ili;ii iiiiiii!00ii + iiiiiiiii iiiii;i i/iiiiii! i iiii!iii!!!ii !iiiill Wha00e00e000000un00ilbrin00id00i+beiiii00idli00 doing +hings." -Hermon 00emne ........ ;;:: ............... : .... !!;!!!!i!!i! !!!i!!i!iii!!!!! !iiii!i!!ii!i!!i!!
