tttttttttttttttttttttALL ~R BTAT MA 29 587 ** SmallTovnPapers 217 W COTA 98584 BHELTDR WA 75 Cents Thursday October 03, 2013 The Official Newspaper of the City of Drayton and Drayton Public School Volume 31 - Number 37 Some things are more important than others, but on the list, blood and oxygen rate quite high. Oxygen is found pretty much everywhere we go and pretty well taken for granted. Blood is quite a bit harder to find when you need it and that's why some folks work so hard to maintain a reserve, known as a blood bank, Blood is donated by people like Kalyn Woinarowicz, pictured above, one of a number of high school students who dropped by Monday to volunteer the precious stuff, at the Fall Blood Drive, sponsored by the Trinity Lutheran Church. Drayton held its first fall blood drive on Monday, September 3rd at Tisdale Manor. Normally there is a winter and a summer drive, so the fall drive offers a third opportunity for United Blood Services to come to our town and collect the precious stuff. The good folks of the Trinity Lutheran Church sponsored and organized the drive, which came complete with a very nice lunch. There were 22 volunteers who donated blood, plus a rmmber of others who volunteered butwere not able to donate this time around. I notice a good number of young folk on Monday who after giving blood, walked back across the street to the school to rejoin their classes, in progress. I thought that pretty commendable. According to Untied Blood Services, 41% of the donors donated platelets, which is a longer process and requires both removing and replacing fluids. That percentage is the highest United Blood Services ever had for donating platelets. In all the 22 donors donated the equivalent of 31 pints of blood. Working that day were Kathy Rath, Marlene Bates and Ruth Tully on the lunch committee and Cheryl Gj evre and Lillian Heine, receiving donors. If there were others there I missed, I apologize. Geive me heck and I'll get it right next week, People from Trinity that helped and were not there today, were the callers - Kathy Rath also wanted me to note that Kay Kreklau and Jim Gebur. were not at the drive but volunteered a lot of time prior to the drive, calling and recruiting volunteers. She's a very knowledgeable professional and really knows her stuff. You might want to go in and have a visit with her. By the by, Darcy, whose second interest is art, painted the wall logo herself. Xperience Health and Fitness is celebrating its 2nd Anniversary on Thursday, October 3rd, having been in its new location on the north end for exactly two years to the day. Owner Darcy Reis is celebrating the occasion with a Membership Appreciation Open House from 4 to 7 p.m. Yes, I've confirmed it, there will be snacks. Also prizes and it's not too late to register. Most of the locals will be getting their paper on Wednesday afternoon, so still time to hop over to the center and register. Also, she has a new member special going on, a $3 membership for October. Might be a good time to join. I did. Asyourememberlastsummer Darcy held a summer boot camp course for area youth to get them in shape for upcoming school sports and just to get in shape, period. Over the winter months she's holding a Pre-Holiday Xperience Fat Blast, primarily for the adults. The idea is to beat the usual holiday wait gain by not gaining at all. The course started yesterday The Drayton/Valley-Endinbur Titan Girl's Volleyball team placed third last week at the Devils Lake Toumament, held in Devils Lake. Really good job considering the girls were playing against a lot of larger schools. The team is pictured above from left to right, back row; Alex Brathan, Kristi Estad, Coach Kelli, Jalyn Larson, Kalyn Woinarowicz and Paige Emanuelson. Front Row: Courtney Estad, Morgan Ellingson and Abby Sonderland. The Drayton/Valley- Edinburg Titan Girls' Volleyballteam placed third in the Devils Lake Tournament held last Saturday. In all, twelve schools participated in the tournament. The team did extrememly well considering many of the schools there were much larger. Looks like they have an excellent, "rest of the season" ahead of them too. The Titans are cuurently #1 in their district. They're playing today (Tuesday) in Park River and on Thursday evening they'll be in Minto. (Monday), so there's still room and time to sign on. It will run every Monday until December 2nd. The class meets from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. After the first of the year she'll start a second fat buster course that will run into March, helping people get ready for the summer and take off some of that winter fat. Every time I go out and visit with Darcy I learn something new. Today I learned that men lose wait easier than women. Finally, a good word or two for us guys. It has to do with the testosterone thing. Basically, testosterone helps you to burn off fat.., with exercise. Note, with exercise ..... because of low testosterone levels, women burn off fewer calories then men, with the same amount of exercise. For those of you guys who have studied the "Low T" commercials and the like, no need to get on the phone. Exercising also builds up your testosterone levels, with no harmful side effects. With the bottled or rub on stuff, you risk changing your wife, children or girl friends into werewolves. There's also some unhealthy side effects for you as well. If you want a magical elixir or an easy way out, try this. Work out and build up your muscles. Doesn't sound so easy does it? But ..... the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn without moving. Kind of a positive spiral. Increasing muscle helps take offfat. Cortisol, another hormone, is associated with building fat. Especially that belly fat. It's also associated with stress and often called the stress hormone. High stress levels and high cortisol levels tend to go hand in hand. Add to it, you're all stressed out, cortisol boiling out of your body and what do you do? Reach for the closest sandwich or slice of cake. A negative spiral. On the other hand, exercise helps to reduce stress. It also burns calories and based on the above, becomes more effective with reduced stress levels. Not only that, but it tends to diminish appetite. Now, keep in mind, I usually forget more than I remember in the course of a day and usually take bad notes that I can't read. So, this is very general on my part, so a little research on your part is a good idea. There's a lot of good reading on it out there. I recommend stopping in and visiting with Darcy, because she actually knows what she's talking about. A good time might be at the open house. Anyway, congratulations Darcy on the fine addition the the community and the good things you do to help your clients. We hope you keep up the good work here for a long time.
