Page 2 November 7th 2013 ........... 00tILry, T],ade and Notices Valley News and Views Some days, everything works. Some days nothing works. But today is a good day. Over the weekend in Western North Dakota, three tech tools failed me at the same time - a network outage, a laptop freeze and a cell phone that needs replacement. If you have deadlines and you cannot get on the hotel's Internet, one has problems. If you go another place and still can not get connected, you become very frustrated, as networks usually cover a wide area. So one day in my life went "dark." Businessmen were wandering the corridors, with cell phones pasted to the ears, and groaning. I headed for Stanton after dark. Driving through the Oil Patch at night was a different experience. Bright lights everywhere, from oncoming headlights of huge trucks, flaring flames from propane burn-off, oil derricks lit up like the Eiffel Tower, and trans-loading sites illuminated like big parking lots. The whole countryside, pictured at night from space, covers the map in a wider view than the speckled lights of Minneapolis and St Paul. Yesterday was a day of recovery, repair and plans for replacement of my cell phone. Today, however, is a good day. Personally, it is a reunion with an old friend who is speaking at the Kennedy Symposium in Bismarck- Harrison "Jack" Schmitt, the first scientist on the moon. We were Fulbright students together at the University of Oslo in 1957-58. Most every weekend back then, the team of five "Fulbrighters" played basketball against a team of Norwegian soccer coaches to demo the game, as basketball was not common in Norway at that time. Often without a referee, it was a fun time with frequent breaks to explain the game. In the skiing season, the "shoe was on the other foot." Most Fulbrighters in Oslo were "flatlanders," including Jack Schmitt from New Mexico. We did not learn from coaches at our beginning levels, rather from peers and sometimes from school children. Some of us practiced on the lighted night trails close by, where five-year-aids could out-ski you, but as the season went on, we became respectable on a down hill run and respected for trying to learn as adults. TheadventureintheSpring was a week's cross-country ski trip with a couple of Norwegians. I joined a group of five - three Americans and two Norwegians - to climb the two highest peaks in Norway on two successive days. The assent was five-to- seven hours - with skis often on one's shoulders at steeper points - and 30 minutes down the other side in wide sweeping turns in powder snow and knees turning to jelly from exertion. Jack studied geology, put him on a track to NASA as a jet pilot, and eventually into the astronaut program. He flew into Denver one Continued On Page 6 Your Professional Prescription Service WE OFFER: Mail-Out Prescriptions Delivery Service Photo Kiosk Blood Pressure Screening 10% Off Senior Citizen Discount Zoovio Video Dealer Hallmark Cards Ye Olde Medicine Center PARK RIVER ('/01) 284-7676 Drayton lye Olde Medicine Drug Center DRAYTON CAVALIER (701) 454-3831 (701) 225-3332 KARA RUHLAND PHARMACIST M-F 8-5:30 Sat g-12 for 60 months OR rebates up to $6,200 on all new OR rebates up to $4,800 on all new BobcaF compact excavators Bobcat compact track loaders for 48 months OR eb@!es p !o S 100 al e Bobcat utility vehicles for 24 months OR $! 3C :e c a re, T0olcat TM utility work machines Hurry in by November 30, 2013 or check Bobcat.comlmyoffers for all models, terms and conditions. Sl 1,000 I I Bobcat of illigon Wilsl0n. NO 70t.572.5050 Congressional Republicans may have shot themselves in the foot in the recent debt limit debacle but everybody is limping. As we look to another such controversy in the next few months, there is a possibility that irreconcilable differences on the left and the right may put the country into an economic downspin in another Congressional impasse. Confidence in our governmental institutions has declined to an abysmal level. It is apparent that Tea Party extremists have been taking the two parties down with them. In a recent Gallup poll, approval of Congress stands at 12 per cent. Republicans may have taken the harshest criticism but confidence in Democrats has also suffered. Pew Research found that 74% of the voters want most members of Congress defeated in 2014; 38 per cent want their own members defeated. The block of 40 uncompromising Tea Party ideologues are determined to push the country over the cliff, even if it means ruining the credit of the country and defaulting on its obligations. It is obvious that ideological purists cannot function constructively in a diverse country that requires compromise for the peaceful co-existence of a wide range of ethnic, religious, economic and social groups. Many Tea Partiers are Evangelical Christians who are absolute about the matters of faith. For that they should be admired. But then they get elected to Congress and bring their absolutism to the secular world, it snarls a system that thrives on compromise. For them, compromise is some sort of sin. The Apostle Paul compromised. God compromised. It' strange that their followers can't do it in the secular world. Now the blame can't be placed solely on Tea Party Congressmen. To get elected, they must have the support of a significant number of like- minded citizens to defeat Republican incumbents in Continued On Page 6 Pregnancy Help Center Memorials & Honorariums "How lovely is thy dwelling place, 0 Lord of hosts!
