Page 8 December 5th 2013 Valley News and Views A Pembina County Retrospective In September 1801 Thomas Miller and eight other men established a post for the Hudson's Bay Company on the east side of the Red near the present site of Emerson, Manitoba. A few days later J. Creboss and ten other men working for the XY Company built a post on the Red just below Alexander Henry's Fort Panbian. No one dared to live further up the Red for fear of Sioux attacks. Cournoyor of the XY Company also built a post in the Hair Hills in 1801. The XY Company and the Hudson's Bay Company consolidated and established a fur post at Pembina in 1803 (source--"all aboard for Pembina") or 1805. One source says it was active until 1823. In March 1802 a Hudson's Bay fur post on the Pembina River near what is now Niche burned and a lot of goods with it. On April 18, 1802, the Hudson's Bay employees left for the Forks (later Winnipeg). The Red River was ice-free byApril 4, 1804. In late 1804 the North West Company and the XY Company merged. Many of Part 3 By K. C. Gardner, Jr. the XY men became "free hunters," free lancers who worked only for themselves and became the foundation of the m6tis people. In 1805-1806 the Sioux renewed their raids into Ojibwa territory, reducing the number of furs the Ojibwa were able to supply Alexander Henry and the North West Company. In July 1808 a combined Wahpeton- Yanktonai war party attacked Pembina and the Ojibwa who lived there. The audacity of the raid persuaded Henry it was time to close his post, which he did in October. The departure of Henry and the resulting collapse of the fur trade led to the rise of the m6tis (mixed people, usually French and Ojibwa or Creel who turned to buffalo hunting as a main source of sustenance and income. Around 1820 the semiannual buffalo hunts became a solidifying factor in the unity of the m6tis. At first the m6tis hunters and their families would all gather at Pembina and use that place as the point of departure onto the plains of Dakota, but by 1840 the m6tis had split into two 12 Packs of Coke Products 2/: ;7.00 PLAY the North Dakota Lottery HERE! The Red River hunters had two hunts per year, both lasting about two months: the first was in June and the second in October. The June to August hunt procured pemmican, dried meat, tongues, other buffalo meat, and hides for lodges, moccasins and other uses; the later hunt produced better meat, half of which was traded at the Hudson's Bay posts, and hides for robes. Mound 1820 a seminarian and catechist, John Harper, accompanied a m6tis hunting party. In 1821 Father Dumoulin went with a buffalo hunting party to the prairies. The m6tis hunters went as far south as the "Big Bend" on the Sheyenne River and west to the Souris River. This brought them into conflict with the Yanktonai, so the U.S. Congress held hearings in which testimony revealed several clashes between the Yanktonai and the m6tis had taken place south of Devils Lake prior to 1844. Documented sources indicate that m6tis hunters were on the Lower Sheyenne in 1840 and the summer of 1867; near what became Ft. Ransom in the fall of 1867; and near the present site of Valley City in 1875 where they slaughtered the last major herd of buffalo in eastern North Dakota. RIDDLE: One morning a man is leaving on a business trip and finds he left some paperwork in his office. He runs into his office to get and the night watchman stops him and says: "Sir, don't get on that plane. I had a dream last night that the plane would crash and everyone on it would die!" The man takes his word and cancels his trip. Sure enough, the plane crashes and everyone on it dies. The next morning the man gives the watchman a $1,000 reward for saving his life, and then fires him. Why did he fire the watchman who saved his life? Answer: He was fired for sleeping on the job!
